Major Chinese automaker FAW Group has invested 19.13 billion yuan ($2.71 billion) in the Changchun Automobile Economic and Technological Development Zone in Changchun -- capital of Northeast China's Jilin province -- according to zone officials.

The investments are in four projects, including a Hongqi new energy vehicle base, which will together expand FAW's production capacity by 750,000 vehicles each year after completion.

Officials said that following completion of the projects, Changchun will become the new energy and intelligent networked vehicles manufacturing base with the largest production capacity in northern China.

They said that since 2019, the zone and the FAW group have partnered up in three projects, with investments of 7.82 billion yuan, increasing FAW's production capacity by 325,000 vehicles each year.

Officials said that with the acceleration of 5G infrastructure in the zone, more auto projects -- including the FAW-Hongqi new energy factory, a new energy and intelligent network innovation pilot base and the intelligent Linglong Tire plant -- have started construction, which will boost development of the auto sector in the zone.

Officials said the zone is also accelerating the construction of the Hongqi international town in the zone, as well as other upgrades and rebuild projects.

They added that the zone will expand its investment and accelerate the development of Changchun international auto city into a national high-quality transformation and upgrading demonstration area for the automobile industry.
