Wang Junnan, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Jilin Committee, called for the provision of emergency medicine in Jilin province to be improved, during the third session of the 12th Jilin Provincial Committee of the CPPCC held in Changchun, the provincial capital.

She said that due to changes in diet and lifestyles, Chinese people are suffering from an increasing number of cardiovascular illnesses, including sudden heart attacks. Wang urged improvements to first aid equipment in public areas, the training of more first aiders, and improvements to the province’s emergency response system.

Most sudden deaths are the result of cardiac events, and automated external defibrillators (AED) can save lives in such cases; they are vital for busy public areas, argued Wang.

Proper use of AED equipment requires basic first aid knowledge, but government research shows that most people lack first aid skills and do not know how to use the equipment, she revealed.

It is vital that we focus on training and ensure more people in Jilin have the skills to potentially save someone’s life, Wang said.
