A high speed rail line from Liaoyuan to Shanhaiguan via Xifeng should be scheduled for the convenience of residents and promotion of the economic development of Liaoyuan, Jilin provincial CPPCC member Jiang Wei suggested.

High speed rail offers passengers the easiest, most comfortable way to travel, and also provides a significant boost for regional economic development.

Liaoyuan has a poor and inconvenient geographical location. If travelers in Liaoyuan want to take bullet trains, they have to drive over 70 kilometers to Siping Station, Jiang noted.

The poor geographical location also plays a part in checking local economic growth, he added.

Labeled as s a resource-exhausted city by China's State Council, Liaoyuan is crying out for transformation.

The phrase "resource-exhausted cities" refers to cities relying on exploitation of raw materials such as coal and oil, and now facing difficulties because of a decline in their supply.

Liaoyuan is a prefecture-level city with a population of 1.3 million in Jilin province. The discovery of coal brought prosperity to the city, which supplied a lot of high-quality coal to the country during the early days of the PRC, especially during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953), known as the Korean War in the West.
