Yin Yanling, head nurse of the neurology department at Brain Hospital of Jilin Province, was one of six Chinese nurses awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross on July 21.

She is Jilin's second nurse to receive the award after Zhang Guiying.

Yin has been working as an obstetric nurse since 1985.

In June, 2000, three babies -- two boys and a girl -- were born in Yin's hospital but they were premature infants and were too weak.

Being the head nurse, Yin attended to the three babies every day using droppers to feed them.

Twelve days later, the infants were able to be fed by feeding-bottles and were healthy enough to return home.

Yin has treated every pregnant woman and newborn considerately and carefully.

The Florence Nightingale Medal was initiated by the International Committee of the Red Cross to honor nurses who have made outstanding contributions to humanitarianism throughout their careers.

A total of 39 nurses from 22 countries won the award this year.
